The following is a 1970s set of protective items for the Swedish police, the helmet is... interesting. It would be a strange sight coming straight at the PCs through smoke or tear gas clouds. However I think the "tactical sandals" would have to be replaced with boots to really make the effect intimidating!

Although the real world item was probably metal, a modern version could make use of composites and ballistic fibre to reduce weight and also allow more volume inside the helmet to fit electronics (along the lines of vision enhancement, HUD, or maybe audio/video recorder or radio, etc. etc.) or gas filters and so on.
