Boxtown Anyone?

Post by Marcus Bone »

One of the most interesting settings from Mike Stackpole's Fiddleback Trilogy is the description of the 'Bowntown' in the heart of Phoenix. Well looks like they are becoming a real viable option here in New Zealand (mainly due to the ongoing housing issues arising from the big Christchurch earthquake a couple of years ago).

I'm not surprised that someone has decided to try and market the idea, I am surprised that it's taken this long however particularly as some architects in Europe have been designing luxury container homes and also office blocks for a few years now.

There's also a company in the USA that has been supplying "container towns" to the military as short term bases of operation or training centres and another in Europe or the UK (can't remember exactly) that has supplied container towns for training (the British Army has such a facility set up to resemble an Afghan village so that they can build up their skills before deploying to Afghanistan).

I'll try and find the websites so I can post the links (I had them on my old computer but never bothered to transfer them to the replacement computer!)

One of my younger mates spent most of the last year stationed at the British Army's training base in Canada, and he says on large exercises many of the accomodation and command structures are container-based.

My folks told me about the containers when they got back from NZ at the tail end of last year. They didn't mention said structures being a commercial proposition though!
