Cthulhu Hack

Post by Linden »

Has anyone played this?

I like the idea of minimalist mechanics. Not quite so keen on its lineage back to D&D - per Kevin's recent post elsewhere I'm not keen on character levels in modern games (or any games really). Are they a feature of the CH does anyone know?

It's quite cheap so might take a punt anyway.

I'd heard of it, but like you I'm not a fan of OSR style games - except for fantasy...

Do shout if it's any good (especially as Cthulhu was my topic of the day :P)

I played Cthulhu Hack at a couple of cons and was impressed enough to get a copy. It suits one-shots and short campaigns best and I like the dice mechanic, simple but bloody dangerous if you keep rolling low!

From the rulebook:
If you roll a 1 or 2 on your Resource Die, the die steps down - if you rolled a 6-sided die and got a 1 or 2, next time you roll a 4-sided die. If you roll 1 or 2 on a 4-sided, that Resource ran out.
For Sanity, that means permanent madness.

It's not level based, with advancement being handled by increases in stats or special abilities.

Also, the author is a genuinely nice bloke!

Thanks for the overview Lee. While there was much to admire in the new Delta Green rpg I found the level of detail a bit overwhelming. Something with streamlined mechanics sounds more up my street - I shall give it a try. Maybe a PoD copy next time Lulu are having a sale (shouldn't be too long now  ).
