Urban Nightmares - A 1st Edition Scenario

Post by Marcus Bone »

Over Christmas I set myself the task of completing a roleplaying scenario (of any setting/system/genre), and ended up settling on fleshing out a Dark Conspiracy adventure idea that I had planned to write for the - what never eventuated - 20th Anniversary edition of Demonground. The result was Urban Nightmares (http://www.darkconspiracytherpg.info/20 ... ightmares/), a bit of a sand-box style story that attempts to demonstrate that the activities and nefarious behaviour of Darklings and their elk can have unexpected - often more dangerous - outcomes.

Here's the blurb -

Things lurk in the dark, in the spaces humanity has left behind. Evil things, vicious things that want for nothing more than our total destruction.

Yet these things we understand, if still fear. What we fail to comprehend are those things hunt us not for survival, nor to feed, or because humanity poses some as yet undefined threat to their existence. No, these things stalk us only for the pleasure…

Unlimited worlds span our universe, and infinite more stretch across the dimensions, and yet among all that potential, how can humanity be reduced to simple playthings?

The premise I'm angling for is that humanity is but one species in the entirety of the dimensions and planes and what makes us so special. Surely, to those creatures that know no difference, we would simply become just another type of prey to be hunted? I needed a creature that was a threat to humans and reflected the present day issues we face with our unrelenting expansion and disregard for the planet - such as we see with Polar Bears and the impact of the melting polar caps - where these animals become victims of change and then come into conflict with us because they are forced to look for food, etc.

The Mishsharno - the Ursidae beasts I created for Urban Nightmares is just that - they aren't evil nor do they really want to be here - they are victims of other beings actions (in this case Dark Elves) and their own nature! Of course, you can't just have a single set of creatures like this in a scenario and so the various red herrings and the threat of the Ptero-Ravens were added to ensure the investigative angle.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with the adventure and its plot - I would have liked to have worked a better way of linking the Mishsharno to the Babbage Complex (and Gateway) area, but the chemical idea seems to be okay?

As always I'm happy to hear any feedback and comments!

Not looked at this yet Marcus, but I will. The question of what makes Earth so special is a good one, whether it's Dark Conspiracy or Call of Cthulhu (Earth seems to be the Great Old Ones' holiday home).

I'm in the same boat as Linden, grabbed it as soon as I saw it but haven't had a chance to really read it yet.
Had a very quick flick through it, absolutely adore the cover art and I really like the idea of "bad guys" who are other beings dragged into someone else's situation rather than being the instigators.
It's not whether you win or lose,

It's whether I win...
