Movies #20, 21 and 22:
A triple-header here, and as they all deal with psychic powers (or empathic abilities if you prefer) header is the word
"Crossworlds" is a Rutger Hauer flick that I still suspect was written by someone who was aware of Dark Conspiracy. An interdimensional power struggle spills over to Earth as "mystics" on both sides of the fight seek a powerful artifact which could allow dimension gates to be opened at will. Also features an early appearance from Jack Black playing a shouty bloke...unusual! The Crossworlds of the title is a place where several dimensions border each other, making it easier to pass from one place to another (in DC terms the borders are magnetic)
Next up,
"The Shadow". Retro pulpy goodness with our intrepid psychic man of action taking up arms against Ghengis Khan's last surviving direct descendant, who is threatening the 1930s with an early atomic bomb. I quite like the way the "strange powers" are handled, and the interplay between The Shadow and Shiwan Khan who are flip sides of the same coin. Alec Baldwin suits the role perfectly, and the movie doesn't pretend to be anything it isn't, which is in its favour of course. Also, Tim Curry! Ian McKellen! The bloke who played Neelix in Voyager!
Finally for today, of course it had to be
"Scanners". If you're dealing with empathy, especially of the neuropathic sort, this is the go-to movie. Things and people explode, there's huge corporate cover-ups, hitmen, pharmaceutical experimentation, and of course it's Cronenberg at his finest so the weirdness and paranoia levels are high!
Lee Williams.
