Well I suppose it's a reaction to the feeling that the public is helpless. With so many people living in the US and realistically, too few police I suppose some people see this as a way to help the crime problem.

In one way it's also about restoring civic pride and duty, something that seems to have been lost in the last 50 years. In the past, citizens would rush to help a police officer trying to apprehend a criminal, nowadays they are too concerned that they might get hurt. And not just hurt in a physical sense, if the criminal has lawyers then those parasitic vermin will ensure that the citizen who was trying to help a police officer will get punished for doing a good deed.
(Along with most politicians, I despise most lawyers - can you tell?
