Data transmission thru walls without the use of cables

BAE recently showed off some new tech at Farnborough airshow/defence expo that allows the transmission of data through solid objects without the need for data cables or even power cables.
Touted as a way to reduce the number of 'holes' needed in a submarine or armoured vehicle hull, it's speculated that the tech could also produce new bugging defences that will be much harder to counter with current detection gear.
