The Esoterrorists 2nd edition

Man this section of the forums has been busy recently :P

As a note, one of my favourite RPGs is getting a facelift with The Esoterrorists 2nd edition. I don't quite know why this setting appeals so much to me, but the more rational worldview of this game sits better with me than the more jumbled Cthulhu Now, or Delta Green settings.

You can probably judge my interest when I say that I never really invest in new releases of products (I usually look to pick them up on special latter in their lifecycle), and yet I've already *coughed-up* for this (and it ain't even got an official release date!).

To celebrate, I'm also looking through some of my old modern day scenario drafts, and hope to bring these back to life in Esoterror format...

Second edition? Cool. Pelgrane Press have a RIDICULOUS amount of talent working for them and I wish I was anything like as good as them!

I thought Trail of Cthulhu was a really well written piece of work...but I just can't get on with the GUMSHOE system. Completely agree with the basic assumption that it's the interpretation of the clues that matter, not searching for them. I just find the realisation a bit too fiddly and artificial (i.e. point spends and various special cases for different skills).

I'd be happy to play a game with a GM who knew what they were about in order to be proved wrong though.

I agree it does create this almost game within a game, where manipulation of resources becomes a focus. Also I know some pretty devoted horror gamers that just can't get their heads around it.

However the thing I like is the structured approach that really makes it easy for me as a GM to create scenarios. Shame I'm not UK based Ljnden as I'd be happy to pop around and run you a game!

If only... I have played one game of ToC which I seem to recall as a rather uninspiring trudge through some mountains and/or forest (possibly in S. America) ending with a miscast teleport spell which dropped us all in R'yleh round about Cthulhu's dinner time. I wasn't over impressed but suspect it isn't representative of most scenarios. Possibly the GM was having an off day as well, not one of his better run games.

I think I know what you mean about structuring. I felt a similar way about Cold City/Hot War scenarios. A format that on the face of it seemed fairly restrictive turns out to be quite the opposite.

That would be most excellent, and I'm not too far from Linden here. Maybe it's time for a "Marcus UK Trip" Kickstarter :)

So I recieved my copy of The Esoterrorists 2nd edition in the mail a few days back. Unfortunately our postie (or someone in transit) wasn't too kind to the book and it was very damaged.

I just wanted to point out that once alerted to the issue, Pelgrane Press (Cat in particular) pulled out all stops to get me a replacement. Great service like that needs highlighting!

I've heard quite a few good things about Pelgrane and their customer service. I like the look of their products and as I might have mentioned I thought ToC was a really well written piece of work. I can't get on with the GUMSHOE system though. :(
