Strange burrows, underground

Post by Story »

And you thought Morlocks where just a scary story.

There are more than 700 curious tunnel networks in Bavaria, but their purpose remains a mystery. Were they built as graves for the souls of the dead, as ritual spaces or as hideaways from marauding bandits? Archeologists are now exploring the subterranean vaults to unravel their secrets.

The Greithanners, from the town of Glonn near Munich, are the owners of a strange subterranean landmark. A labyrinth of vaults known as an "Erdstall" runs underneath their property. It is at least 25 meters (82 feet) long and likely stems from the Middle Ages. Some believe that it was built as a dwelling for helpful goblins.

It’s the stuff scary movies are made of: Don’t look under the bed, or you’ll fall through a giant chasm in the earth.

But for a woman in Guatemala City, it was all too real. On Monday, 65-year-old Inocenta Hernandez was shocked by a loud boom, which she assumed was the explosion of a neighbor’s gas canister.

Instead, it was a sinkhole 40 feet deep and 32 inches in diameter that had formed beneath her bed, the Guardian reports.

A building that housed both the shop and the Saaraa Corner Store began collapsing on June 27 when the sinkhole opened after heavy rains. The roof began collapsing on July 11 because the building's back wall collapsed into the hole according to city spokesman Robert Sargent. Estimated at 60 to 70 feet across, the hole's size hasn't changed according to Sargent though residents have reported cracks and crumbling of asphalt on Crosby Street behind the shop.

That reminds me of the Tempar Tunnles in Acco wich have been only discovered in the 1990s.
