As an alternative, you could write a similar opinion piece for this new fanzine I heard of that's just starting out :D
Not a bad idea that... although I haven't really thought it through aside from my opinion that games systems from the 1990s to mid-2000s are more satisfying (in terms of challenge, reward, playability, levels of detail and so on) and my belief that many players today don't seem very keen to step outside the (well overdone by now) fantasy genre.

The trouble I have is that most of the players I know aren't interested in plot based games, and instead seem to gravitate towards the Indy style of character-driven roleplaying. While I think that type of game has its place, it does little in my mind to fill the urge for story (as opposed to personal angst!)...

I think you've identified something quite important there Marcus. While I was thinking that they all seem to be attracted to games that offer "all action, all the time", it's probably more likely that they're attracted to games that emphasize personal/individual interaction over team/group interaction - they want games that make them feel like superheroes whereas I want games that make my character feel mortal.

My tastes in game styles has definitely and obviously changed over time but I still meet people with similar experience and/or time in gaming, often of a similar age to me, who want to be special snowflakes and have the game revolve around them rather than play with the group as a team. So it's not just the younger gamers or people fresh to the hobby, there's plenty of older gamers and people with longer time in the hobby who are being just as selfish.

I'm fooling around with a Boot Hill/OSRIC mix, OSRIC uses pounds, not "coins". I'm using weight of gear in GURPS Old West. OSIC also lets me throw Vampires and Were's or plain old Far East martial artists at Promise City.

I think that's true. Most forums where there are players looking for games the majority want to play D&D of one sort or another. I have absolutely zero interest in orcs, goblins, wizards and quests for the mystical sword of dobber. It's a mystery to me why people want to plough through the same old slop fantasy cliches. There are so many other interesting games and genres out there, sticking with D&D is like confining yourself to a diet of poor quality junk food.

You might have noticed that your ranks have changed (reverted back a step or two). Nothing personal this is just a few changes to the site to make it a bit easier for me to manage. on a more positive note, I have increased the PM inbox of everyone to 200 messages!

So I think I've finished tweaking the main site... you'll see a better index of our articles, lots more information about the game and it's products and even some new header art on certain pages. Hope you enjoy!

Just a note to say that I've registered the darkconspiracytherpg.com URL (that simply redirects to darkconspiracytherpg.info). Read into that what you will...

Looks like we had a couple of spammers this morning, apparently from Chinese IP addresses. While I am sure that some people do want to buy sunglasses and NFL jerseys this isn't the place - bye bye spammers

So I take it that at the moment the site is in a state of flux due to the changes necessary to open it to other games? For example, I can see the sub-forums for Cthulhu, Delta Green etc. etc. but I'm getting the message that I don't have the access privileges to view them. :?

Should have sorted it now... the latest upgrade to the forum software had changed the permission structure. Looks like the old one worked fine until I fooled around with it to create the new forums. Huh...

As I'm plastering this on every other Dark Conspiracy forum...

Just in time for Christmas a review of Nightsider (http://www.darkconspiracytherpg.info/…/ ... ightsider/) over at www.darkconspiracytherpg.info

I'm actually glad that you did. I had email notifications from the other sites but forgot about it and when I saw your post here I got off my backside and actually read the review. Overall I agree with what you've said although my reaction to Nightsider after I had bought it was a bit more (okay, maybe a lot more...) negative than yours :|
To be a little fair to myself, when I first bought Nightsider, I was a relatively new GM who had mostly run D&D 2nd Ed. games so the "missing" connection between the Nightsider scenarios appeared to more of a problem to me than it probably would have been to an experienced GM.

However, after reading your review and thinking less about what is missing from Nightsider and more about how to link the scenarios together, I now find I want to convince my gaming group to go back to Dark Conspiracy rather than try out D&D 5th edition. We take turns as GM and the current GM is running Call Of Cthulhu but wants a good break between his current game and the next one he runs - Dark Conspiracy might be a very good choice for keeping people in the horror genre without diminishing the feel and impact of Cthulhu... and that's how I'm going to plug it to the group!

A new Story Seed/Tabloid posted up on the site... this time we are discussing an idea that could head in some very dark directions...
