Cthulhu Rising

Post by Linden »

Continuing the theme of Aliens style rpgs, has anyone got this? If so, would you recommend it? I remember giving the free version a cursory look over a while back and quite liking what I saw but thinking it was perhaps a bit on the sketchy side. The expanded monograph PDF seems reasonably priced on DriveThruRPG. Is it worth getting the Jovian Nightmares sourcebook as well?

Hey Linden...

Looks like our tastes continue to echo each other :P Yep, I own and have run Cthulhu Rising (as an aside I'm also awaiting for John Ossoway's new sci-fi game 'River of Heaven').

It is a interesting setting, but it lacks enough detail as what to do. Also, and this is a personal thing, I don't think Cthulhu works in a space setting (the Mythos horrors to me are linked to Earth).

Happy to provide more details on the books if you're interested...

I got that impression but I thought I'd use some of the 2300 scenarios in Challenge and elsewhere, either giving them a Cthulhoid spin or playing them as straight sci-fi. Some of the mythos races are extra-terrestrial e.g. the mi-go, star spawn and elder things but it would be useful to have some pointers about how to integrate them into a science fiction setting. What worlds do they inhabit, how active are they, what are their goals? etc

Seems as though New Horizon is one of the very few alternatives available if you want Cthulhu in space.
River Of Heaven is no longer available on DriveThruRPG, arguable one of the best places for it to be to gain any sort of publicity.
It's still available through the company online store but they have such a small web presence, you can be forgiven for not even knowing about them or their products.

Oh no, RoH is still available, but in its 'Refreshed' format - https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/28 ... -Refreshed.
Not much changed really, except a few added clarifications and some typos fixed.

BTW, I've submitted a bit of material for RoH, and hope to see it published officially in some way or another soon!

Ah, I didn't see that.

Thanks for that, will give it a look.

I'm actually running a game of Cthulhu Rising on Tuesday. Met some chaps from Bristol via a Discord group and played a one-shot game of Mothership which went well although none of us reckoned the game system much. Anyway, I asked if they'd be interested in a sequel using the same characters but using Cthulhu Rising rules and they said yes. I've adapted the old Dark Conspiracy scenario The Istrian Affair and set it on one of Jupiter's moons. Early days yet but could develop into a campaign. I've got a vague idea of something loosely based on Prometheus with the Elder Things replacing the Engineers, and turning out to be a not particularly benign influence in the galaxy. Always thought there was something of the cosmic idiot about them, messing around with genetics but not much idea of what they were about - Shoggoths not a great idea really were they?
