A Night on the Town - A The Esoterrorists Demo Scenario

Post by Marcus Bone »

Because I can - I have popped a The Esoterrorists scenario up on my http://www.unboundbook.org site...
With the release of the second edition of The Esoterrorists (published by Pelgrane Press in 2013), I thought it would be a great opportunity to introduce this game to a group of my fellow roleplayers. As I’m sure many of you reading this post have found, the GUMSHOE system brings a new paradigm to the game table, one that at first sight can be disconcerting to even the most experienced gamer. As such, I thought it would be a good idea to create a scenario that did for the Esoterrorists what Kevin Kulp’s Stowaway Quick Start did for Ashen Stars.

The result is A Night on the Town (http://www.unboundbook.org/?page_id=251) – a Demonstration Scenario for The Esoterrorists 2nd Edition. A short scenario based around an ‘infiltrate and scram’ adventure, it comes with notes for inexperienced GUMSHOE Gamemasters, and a sampling of Ordo Veritatis operatives.

Like it Marcus. Nicely presented too. Very tempted to run it as part of my CoC campaign - the artist group being influenced by the Hastur/The King in Yellow perhaps.

By a strange coincidence have just been reading about the redevelopment of London's docklands so Whitestone's back story struck a chord. A more benevolent and cultured version of Harold Shand from The Long Good Friday perhaps?

Thanks for the kind words Linden!

I have a number of The Esoterrorists adventures in various levels of completeness on one of my Hard Drives. My new found inspiration to write should see some of them raise their heads above a draft at some point!

In regards to The Long Good Friday - I've never seen the movie (something I must fix ASAP), so no Harold Shand has no relationship to Whitestone - well not intentionally at least! :P

Cheers!

Marcus

P.S. I'd be keen on hearing the outcome of your CoC play through, if it happens!

I remember seeing the trailer for it when I was a kid (possibly when attending a screening of The Empire Strikes Back) and thinking it was a horror film. In a way perhaps it is - Bob Hoskins does seem to be fighting an unknown, almost supernatural enemy for the first half of the film.

My CoC campaign is set in the 1970s with the current year being 1976. I think your scenario would work well at the end of the decade just as interest was starting to stir in the redevelopment of London's dockland. Could be a while before we play it (if the investigators last that long) but will report back if we do.
