Opening Up this Forum...

Post by Marcus Bone »

Hi All,

With the demise of yet another forum (in this case Pelgrane Press'), I've started to think that it might be time to open this place to a wider 'generic horror' audience. In my mind this aligns itself with the idea of Lee's Dark Times magazine (which he main site will host) and my interest in other gaming material (as I'm sure you see me mention now and then!).

Any thoughts?

You know, I think that that is a great idea Marcus. It's been interesting (not necessarily in a good way) to see the rise and fall of a number of gaming forums over the years, particularly those associated with well-established IPs (that appear to have good appeal) and even those forums set up by game publishers.
A lot of people really feel the loss of a forum they've been part of for years and I think they want something to replace it but are often unable to find anything that suits.

There's also the benefit of cross-pollinization of ideas when groups of people with similar interests congregate at the one site.
So yeah, I very much support the idea.

I think it's a good idea for all the reasons Kevin mentions. I'm surprised that Pelgrane couldn't keep things going though, they aren't exactly small fry as publishers go.

I'm guessing it is energy verse benefit... they do have an active social media presence. As seen here, the urge to post on forums (in a gaming sense) is steadily decreasing - even the big boys like RPG.net aren't as active as they once were (although I know other factors contribute to that as well).

I think you've identified one of the primary reasons for this Marcus - social media sites. I understand the attraction of having a special interest group presence on social media but I find social media sites don't have the functionality of a proper forum site. For example, the ability to post files for downloading is more often found on forums like those Yahoo provides than they are on social media sites like Facebook.
I feel that the functions of a proper forum far outweigh the ease of use of social media sites

I have a dislike of social media sites in general so by the choice I've made not to patronise them, I do miss out on some content that's posted there and not elsewhere. But it also means I miss out on a lot of the trivial crap that's received when you're a member of such sites. And frankly, I'm getting lazy these days, I do not want to wade through all the trivial bullshit that's posted by some of my family, friends, associates who are already on facebook, just to get the small amount of content that genuinely interests me.

So you'll all likely see a few changes to the forums as a result of this decision to open up the site, with a few more to come. In fact you might start to see less Dark Conspiracy branding as well...

as always, I'm open to comments and suggestions!
