Time For Change?

Hi all.

Apologies if anyone has been affected or put off by the sudden wave of spam accounts and posts over the last 30-ish hours. In my Admin mode I have just deleted NINETY-FIVE fake accounts - thank goodness for the option to prune multiple users! :P

Anyway, we might have to set things so that all new users have to be approved by an admin. Marcus, what do you think?

Making new members wait for approval before they can start posting or giving them a very limited amount of posts per day certainly weeds out some of the spammers.
I don't think it's a bad thing especially considering what I saw here today (one of the spammers had made something like 93 posts in the day or so he/she had signed up)

Hi Guys,

I've updated the spam question for registering - that usually stops any auto registrations for a while.

I'll also start an update to the board code, as it could be a weakness in the current version. As such the site might be off line for a while (minutes hopefully!)

Update complete... let's hope that keeps those pesky spammers at bay for a few more months :P

Nice one Marcus! :D

Probably the only benefit of being on opposite sides of the globe is that one or other of us can catch these things and deal with them without the other needing to worry, or even needing to be awake ;)

I'd be in favour of that. How easy is it to weed out the spammers and bots though? Possibly there's something in the registration details that indicates they're a wrong 'un e.g. unlikely name or a paucity of personal details?

The latter is generally the giveaway with the kind of spam we get on here. I can't believe we had that much all at once, that was probably more than our previous spammers put together! :/

It was obviously all bots and auto complete scripts. Looks l we got onto some spam list or another. As often happens, a quick chance to the anti spam tool and everything goes away - for a while any way :(
