Re: Reasons for DC's Greater Depression

On the flip side, the Swede was saying the government and people in general there apparently refused to believe the reports that stated people showing no symptoms could be carriers of the virus and apparently Sweden made no efforts to enforce the quarantine. I've said "apparently" a lot i...

Re: [Games That Shaped Me] Part One - Dark Conspiracy

It always worried me that Zvezda disappeared as he did - I know he lived in the Ukraine and he vanished around the time all the unrest with Russia occurred. I corresponded with him a few years ago and he was living in Berlin. His Facebook page remains active (as of 20th March) and he still seems to...

Re: [Games That Shaped Me] Part One - Dark Conspiracy

I doubt if anyone ever really enjoyed the system as written  Umm... Well... Actually... I think Zvezda is on record somewhere in the mists of time on this forum saying he liked it as well - whatever happened to him, does anyone know? Anyway, back on topic more or less, I remember a UK fanzine...

Re: [Games That Shaped Me] Part One - Dark Conspiracy

To this day I'm not the biggest fan of the GDW system, although I like its core Stat+Skill & Difficulty Level approach, so I'm not sure I could ever run a 'standard' DC game ever again... despite have dozens of scenario ideas for it! Me neither. By the time of the third campaign I'd got so fed ...

Re: Cthulhu Hack

Thanks for the overview Lee. While there was much to admire in the new Delta Green rpg I found the level of detail a bit overwhelming. Something with streamlined mechanics sounds more up my street - I shall give it a try. Maybe a PoD copy next time Lulu are having a sale (shouldn't be too long now :...

Cthulhu Hack

Has anyone played this ? I like the idea of minimalist mechanics. Not quite so keen on its lineage back to D&D - per Kevin's recent post elsewhere I'm not keen on character levels in modern games (or any games really). Are they a feature of the CH does anyone know? It's quite cheap so might take...

Re: [Games That Shaped Me] Part One - Dark Conspiracy

Thinking back on it, DC was the fourth game that I ever purchased and it was initially to support the (Twilight: 2000 alternate gameworld) Merc: 2000 campaign I was running. Then it eclipsed the M2k game and I started running DC full on even after the end of GDW. I eventually found Demonground so t...

Re: Updates to www.darkconspiracy.info

I saw electronic outfit Survive a couple of years back. They were very Carpenter-esque. I thought they worked better live than on record oddly enough, the one album I listened to sounded a bit like a thin pastiche. In the flesh they had noticeably more "oomph". Could imagine them playing s...

Re: Mothership

Mother ship sounds interesting enough but I'd be using the word setting and a better set of rules if I was going to run it. However, I reckon the Cepheus engine games emulate those 1980s-90s sci-fi movies better than Mothership so I'd probably just use them instead! That's interesting - my feeling ...

Re: Mothership

Some of those rules from the 1980s were as stodgy as a bag of wet rice :D I'm amazed that a modern game would feature a rule where body armour makes you more difficult to hit. Having tried on a Vietnam era flak jacket and a present day police issue stab vest I don't think either of them would do mu...

Re: Mothership

I get the feel that a lot of that praise is hype rather than genuine review of its flaws and strengths. I think you're right there mate, I was mystified by the amount of people who were foaming all over it. Undeniably the game has some interesting ideas but a lot of the mechanics belong back in the...

Mothership

Sci-Fi horror rpg with an Event Horizon/Aliens feel perhaps geared towards transitioning D&D playing types to something a little different. http://www.tuesdayknightgames.com/mothership Not that sold on a lot of the mechanics (you have to beat your opponents armour saving throw to hit and do dama...

Re: Reasons for DC's Greater Depression

Those kind of timelines can be interesting and even useful for the GM, but yes I'd agree the majority of players aren't interested. In terms of ones that haven't dated well GDW did a real blow by blow effort for Twlight/Merc 2000 which bore no resemblance whatsoever to reality or how the world works...

Re: Reasons for DC's Greater Depression

I don't think it takes much - some kind of Black Swan type event and the whole thing comes crashing down. We had it in 2008 and government bail outs were perhaps able to mitigate the worse effects. What happens when the governments run out of cash? I can't see the present lock down situation being f...

Re: What to Review Next?

Having run Heart of Darkness (subsequent to conducting radical surgery on it) I'd be interested in another perspective. My feeling was that it was potentially a great adventure spoiled by utterly pedestrian execution. Challenge articles would be interesting, they tended to vary wildly in quality - I...
