Threshold, a recent (last year) TV series was pretty DC, set in the present or very near future. ET's try to take over the world with a sonic/psychic signal. Even had some nice Fopreboding type dreams.

My vote is for a book on proto-dimensions. Regarding another Dark Races book, definite maybe. It's always an option (in games I run) to simply change an aspect or two of an existing creature to confuse the party. Flame-resistant mummies are always a surprise.
